The History of Valentine’s Day Romance Exposed

A mystery has surrounded the origin of Valentine’s Day for centuries. There are many legends and folktales that try to explain the start of the most romantic day of the year. Many believe that Valentine’s Day is a tradition that we received from the ancient Romans and early Christians.

The Three St. Valentines

Legend has it the holiday stems from Saint Valentine, who served as a priest during the era of the Emperor Claudius.  It was Claudius that was responsible for having Valentine imprisoned for defying his laws, one of these laws which made it illegal for young men to marry.

However, there are several legends that say St. Valentine was a Roman who was jailed for refusing to stop the practice of Christianity. The date that he refused to give up his beliefs was Feb. 14, 269 A.D.

Today, there are three St. Valentine’s that are recognized. The third St. Valentine was imprisoned for assisting Christians in their escape from Roman prisons.

Ancient Rome

In ancient Rome, the Romans honored Juno, who was the Goddess of marriage and women. February 14 was the day that Romans set aside to honor Juno, the queen of the Gods and Goddesses of Rome.
